To help voters, CAGV grades candidates running for the CT General Assembly. We also endorse candidates who we believe will be leaders in passing strong gun laws and have already distinguished themselves as champions of gun violence prevention, making it central to their core beliefs. Stephanie Thomas has both received an A grade and has received our endorsement.
AFT Connecticut represents over 30,000 workers in the public and private sectors. We are thrilled to announce PoliticaCT’s Candidate Endorsement for the 2020 CT General Assembly elections: Stephanie Thomas for State Representative! Out of the 151 current CT State Representatives, only 33% are women and only 7 are women of color. We share a fundamental belief in the simple notion that our communities and our democracy are stronger when women are full and equal participants.
For the past four decades we have been advocating for the passage of pro-choice legislation and fighting against anti-choice policies in our state. Our mission is to develop and sustain a constituency that uses the political process to guarantee every woman the right to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive choices, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion.
The pandemic has exacerbated many of the inequities in our state, as low wage workers and communities of color have borne the brunt of uncertainty that the crisis created. Candidates endorsed by the Working Families Party understand this, and are willing to support smart, forward thinking policy solutions, centering and investing in the lives of Black, brown and white working class folks with policies like a statewide Green New Deal or a public healthcare option.
It is an honor to inform you that following the recommendation of our Legislative Committee, and a vote by our Delegates, the Uniformed Professional Fire Fighters Association of Connecticut heartily endorses your candidacy for the 143rd House District.
We are the Service Employees International Union, a union of about 2 million diverse members in healthcare, the public sector and property services who believe in and fight for our Vision for a Just Society: where all workers are valued and all people respected—no matter where we come from or what color we are; where all families and communities can thrive; and where we leave a better and more equitable world for generations to come.
Connecticut’s communities never rest. Streets need cleaning. Families need care. Students deserve well-run schools, and our neighborhoods demand safety. That’s why people who work in public service never stop. This isn’t just a job. It’s a calling. The work matters because it means something to make a community better. We believe that that every person working to sustain their community deserves respect. Our 30,000 members in Connecticut provide the vital services that make America happen, and we believe everyone deserves a chance to fulfill the American dream.
